IDEX Online Research: Harry Winston: Uber-Luxury Jewelry
Sales Don't Necessarily Mean Big Profits
By Ken Gassman May
22, 08
Harry Winston
Diamond Corporation's 2008 annual report to shareholders highlights one
of its key strategies: "The company focuses on the two most
profitable segments of the diamond industry, mining and retail, in
which its expertise creates shareholder value." While we
agree with this statement conceptually, there is a problem: the
retail segment of the company's business - world premier retail jeweler
Harry Winston - doesn't seem to be contributing to that strategy. >>>

Joining California's new Gold Rush
BBC News, California May 23, 2008
In
America, record prices are fuelling a new Gold Rush - 160 years after
thousands descended on California, seeking riches. With uncertainty in
oil and stock markets, gold is seen as a stable investment - it hit a
new high of more than $1,000 (£500) an ounce earlier this year and some
think there is money to be made once more. "You can pay your
bills, if you live meagrely," says John Gurney, who gave up his
job six months ago to become a full-time gold prospector. >>>

Retailers will face weaker 2008 sales
By Anne
D'Innocenzio / Associated Press May 23, 2008
The latest
reports from the nation's merchants show that higher energy and food
bills and slumping home values are pressuring shoppers so much they're
being forced to nibble at the edges -- buying single pillows rather
than whole sets and opting for new paint instead of renovating. The
weakening climate could also spell more store closings and layoffs, as
the industry looks ahead to a second half of 2008 that could be worse
than the first half. >>>

National

Remember that
old catchphrase, "You only get one chance to make a first
impression?" This is a good way to think about your brand's
identity and how your customer thinks of you.
When a person passes by your store or trade show booth, views your
magazine ad or Web site, sees someone carrying your shopping bag and so
on, they are being exposed to your brand's identity. Within each of

Keep rival sales associates from behaving
badly
National
Jeweler May 21, 2008
In
retail, a little competition can be a good thing, as it keeps
salespeople on their toes and prompts them to push one another to
achieve and exceed their goals.
Sometimes, however, the competitive spirit among members of a sales
team can get so intense, it causes discord and dissension-and, as the
team leader, you can end up in the unenviable position of having two
valued team members who actually dislike and resent one another. >>>
